Community Organizer

Power U requires a talented and enthusiastic individual to help Parents and Community Residents
work alongside young people in Miami-Dade County to create transformative campaigns. This
person would be responsible for implementing campaigns that improve the lives of everyday
people, as well as coordinating community canvass initiatives that connect residents to the
organization. This work would be in line with our principles of unity.

Report To: Organizing Director

Roles and Responsibilities

Base building Recruitment and Campaign Development 35%

  • Actively meets one-on-one with people (especially parents of MDCPS students) to recruit them into
    the organization
  • Meets with key stakeholders in South Florida to discover what issue campaigns need to be
    created
  • Engage with community members in various outreach methods to recruit them into Power U’s
    base of supporters, especially within School Board District 2 and County District 3.
  • Facilitates workshops, presentations, and trainings for staff and members around issues and
    ideas related to campaigns
  • Must build consistent relationships with Community residents, Teachers, and Families,
    recruiting them into monthly meetings
  • Staying abreast on current events and policy decisions that affect campaign strategy
  • Works with the Organizing Team to develop materials that inform staff and members of how
    issues are incorporated in the County Budgets.
  • Able to speak at press events and rallies related to campaign issues.

Outreach Canvassing Coordination 35%

  • Implement Power U’s Community Canvassing that occurs during the months of March-July.
  • Receive and implement feedback given in supervision with the Organizing Director.
  • Cutting Turf and building Canvass teams based on Organizational Priorities
  • Responsible for making sure data is updated in EveryAction
  • Coordination of Phone Banking & Lead Training for all participants

Member development 20%

  • Provides regular coaching and mentorship of members
  • Train members in Base building and recruitment techniques
  • Supports speech writing and prep work related to leading actions
  • Support and facilitate member meetings and retreats.

Special Projects – 10%

  • Will support other organizing teams with turnout and working on key events and projects
  • Providing Neighborhood Overview and Canvass Progress to inform Org Strategies
  • Represents Power U on key trips, delegations, and conferences

What we are looking for:

Experience:

  • Proficient in using Every Action & NGP VAN
  • Someone willing to talk to people from all walks of life
  • Proven track record of Project management
  • Has some involvement or experience in social justice
  • Someone who will make a commitment to learn about the neighborhoods they are organizing

Qualities:

  • The ability to meet deadlines under pressure. Much of the organizing work will be impacted if
    materials or content do not get developed on time.
  • Strong Interpersonal Skills. You will need to collaborate with a broad range of people, so being
    able to have difficult conversations and building relationships across differences is vital
  • Self Starter. This position’s success is dependent on your ability to manage your own workload
    and you will need to take the initiative to seek out projects on your own at times for the sake of the
    organization.
  • Skill in practicing flexibility. Much of the organizing work is dynamic, with conditions constantly
    changing, creating moments where you must feel comfortable stopping one task or project to
    do something that might be more useful for the organization in the present moment.
  • Desire for Feedback. You must be open and willing to receive feedback from various staff in
    order to improve the quality of work.

Non-Negotiables
Can work unconventional hours. This position requires you to attend events or meetings that may
occur on weekends or outside the “9-5” window.

  • Well-informed on local politics and current events. We know that as current events change
    quickly, we need someone who will ensure that our messaging and outward-facing presence is
    relevant.
  • Commitment to Study. Staff will frequently be tasked with collective readings together in order
    to collectively learn as an organization.

$60,000 Salary plus Full Benefits

About Power U
Power U Center for Social Change is a grassroots organization based in Miami, FL. We envision
a society free from all forms of oppression in which decisions are made democratically and
resources are utilized for the collective benefit of everyone. Toward that vision, our mission is
to organize and develop the leadership of Black and Latino youth and Black women in South
Florida so that they may help lead the struggle to liberate all oppressed people. Our current
programming focuses on educational justice, fighting state violence and criminalization, and
advancing reproductive justice. As an alternative to coercive forms of punishment and control,
we are working to win restorative and reproductive justice-based policies both in our schools
and our communities while also fighting to increase the communities' ability to decide how
resources are allocated in Miami-Dade Public School’s budget and Miami Dade County’ Budget broadly..

Description of Duties:
● Engage with community members in various outreach methods to recruit them into
Power U’s base of supporters of Reproductive Justice Issues.
● Facilitates workshops, presentations, and trainings for staff and members around RJ
issues and ideas
● Must build relationships with school administrators, Teachers, Parents, and Students
● Staying abreast on current events and policy decisions that affect campaign strategy
● Works with the Development Coordinator to manage a list of monthly sustainers
● Provide input on relevant grant proposals and reports
● Works with the Organizing Director to develop materials that inform staff and members on
How reproductive justice issues impact the school district budget
● Participate in staff political education and other staff development activities 
Qualifications
● Strong Commitment to social justice;
● 2-3 years experience in grassroots organizing, social justice issues, human rights, or
structural racism;
● Demonstrates a strong grasp of gender oppression within a global context
● Strong analytical skills, particularly in regard to socio-political, environmental, and
economic contexts;

● Strong communication, negotiation, and diplomacy skills;
● Must be able to articulate messages around social justice policy, human rights, needs,
etc. for campaigns;
● Enjoys and excels at networking;
● Demonstrated leadership skills, including motivation, strategic direction, conflict
resolution
● Willingness to work irregular hours and to travel;
● Strong project management skills;
● Excellent outreach and networking skills;
● Experience working with students and youth;
● Ability to identify and develop leadership among members;
● Experience with coaching and mentorship;
● Knowledge of school-to-prison pipeline issues and reproductive justice issues;
● Bi-lingual in Spanish or Haitian Kreyol a plus.
