On Wednesday – November 17th, Power U Members mobilized at the Miami-Dade County Public School Board to attend the hearing and build more work and learn more about the developments of issue areas our organizing committees, and this year’s campaigns around Mental Health, Youth Democracy, and increased opportunities for Child Care and services are working to tackle.
Q: Why did you show up today Amerie?
A: I showed up today because I wanted to see the progress on agenda item H-21 because of its significance to the civic engagement committee and our members who have worked on this campaign centered around increasing youth democracy. I have recently seen some of the proposed actions in place, but at the same time, there are many proposed actions that have yet to be in place to support student voices being not only heard but felt and have action taken around our advocacy. With seeking this agenda, I was intrigued to hear the report back on the progress of these actions on the H-21 agenda Item.
Q: What outcomes are you hoping for?
A: I am hoping to hear more about the progress of some of the proposed actions such as the survey distribution and the comment section through the student portal–these actions have yet to be put in place. I am looking forward to working closely with the school board in order to make these proposed actions come to fruition.
Q: What is the next step in moving this forward?
A: The next step would be persistence, and deepening connection with the school board members in order to amplify students’ voices and our concerns and push for more initiatives that support youth input and decision-making power.
Q: Why did you show up today Suzy?

Q: What outcomes are you hoping for?
A: The increase of funding towards Trust Counselors in MDCPS and for those professionals to be full-time Mental health counselors instead of them being stationed at the school two times a week. Mental Health professionals need to be in-sourced and more long-term relationships need to be built in order to build better trust with students, the agenda items being discussed today are closer steps to better support being provided for our everyday.
Q: What is the next step in moving this forward?
A: Continuing to come to more school board meetings and speak about these issues and mobilize the folks who are facing these issues so we can gain more power so we can achieve our goals inside our campaign, and change the experiences of thousands of students across the county.
Youth members through engaging in this years budget cycle are working to have follow-up meetings with school board members and the youth advisory in an effort to learn more about the implementation of new health screening infrastructure along with other programs and initiatives being launched to have student feedback on the district portal be more accessible to students across the county.
